WANG Liangbao and colleagues at the Hefei Institute of Physical Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences were able to use surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) of ethanol extracts to determine poisons in an oily matrix with high sensitivity. Using a portable Raman spectrometer, they detected paraquat and diquat in kitchen waste with a detection limit of 10 – 100 ppb, with a standard deviation of 7%.
