CAS Ningbo Institute of Material Technology and Engineering develops cellulose-based “sponge” for oil-water separation

The team regenerated cellulose by co-dissolving a pore-forming agent resulting in a nanopore, macroporous cellulose sponge matrix which could be used to separate surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water emulsion. Without chemical modification, this sponge had special wetting properties and could be used for oil-air, or underwater applications.
