Group at CAS Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology identify protein involved in cellulose crystallization

BC1, a glycosylposphatidyl inositol anchored protein, is released into cell walls by removal of the GPI anchor and possesses a carbohydrate-binding module interacting specifically with crystalline cellulose. The amount of BC1 expressed thus modulates cellulose crystallinity. The studies were done in rice.
